Hello There!

I'm Kit,

The proud founder of the woman owned and operated landscaping company Nurtured by Nature Gardenscaping.

It is my passion and desire to help others create uniquely beautiful spaces to bring them joy and healing in their own backyards… or front yards.

As a locally grown gardener who is passionate about the outdoors, I spend close to 365 days outside.  You guessed it – rain or shine, I’m out there finding beauty and awe in Mother Nature.

You’ll often find me at the beach foraging for funky driftwood and pretty stones or down by the river gaining inspiration, identifying plants, and swimming in the emerald green waters.  Anywhere the water meets the shore, I’ll be there.  Some people say I’m part frog because I too rejoice when it rains.

Growing up, I spent most of my days playing in the woods, collecting berries and building forts down by the river with my brother.  Mother Nature is the perfect playground for any age as she is ever-changing through the seasons.

My love for plants and pretty flowers may be genetic.  When I was little, my mom worked at Art Knapp for many years.  She designed all of our garden beds to have colour all year long.  Always a bounty of food and flowers.  The magnificent colours and scents of carnations and sweet peas was intoxicating, subtle and almost euphoric.  Also, there was fresh peas and raspberries to be picked daily in the summertime… that was my job.  So fresh and crisp.  Most of them went in my belly instead of the bowl.

I was always playing in the garden from a very young age.  I’d often watch my dad as he would cultivate little cuttings from plants that he found intriguing or interesting.  He has an amazing green thumb!  He even cultivated a whole emerald cedar hedge from wee cuttings!  He sure has a knack for nurturing these little plant beings.

Soon, I found myself starting to do the same… pulling out seedlings that I found growing in cracks in the road and transplanting them into pots.  The start of a forest…

“Planting trees is for the future generations. They will benefit from the fruits of our labour.”

In my early 20’s, I became fascinated with farming and permaculture (the creation of agricultural systems that are sustainable and self-sufficient). Permaculture works with nature instead of against it.  In the wild, ecosystems regenerate on their own and are self-maintaining.

I am amazed at how Mother Nature always knows just the right time to send out little blossoms when the temperatures are just right and she continually makes her own compost year-after-year as the leaves fall at the end of the season.  Everything happens at the perfect time and nothing is rushed.  That alone is true inspiration!

I loved going to grandma’s house and eating fresh carrots straight from the garden without even washing them. They smelled so good and tasted even better.  I would tussle the dill flowers so they released their aroma and maybe eat a few seeds.  It seemed so exotic and yet so simple.  The way real food should taste – fresh, crisp and full of life force energy!

Raising a family of my own, I wanted to go back to my roots, become more self-sufficient and sustainable.  I wanted to work with the land, eat fresh healthy foods, incorporate permaculture practices and build healthy soils.  I found myself creating beautiful gardens that combined food, flowers and trees.  This led me to landscaping.  I love tending to plants and in return, they nurture me.

Sincerely,

Kit
